Scenario

A private sector bank which operated at a limited level in Pakistan, acquired a large local private sector bank, this resulted in extensive organizational growth in terms of number of branches and profitability. Both banks had different organizational cultures first one dominated with a team-based culture, and second one having a typical beaurocratic culture of government organizations. Here, different ethnical groups, older workers, cultural differences, gender and education are the sources of workforce diversity.

Keeping in view the above scenario, discuss how work force diversity can be considered as an asset for the new setup? Furthermore, enlist two major challenges which bank has to face now. Explain each point with sound arguments.

Answer:

In the scenario discussed,  the ethnical groups , older workers, cultural differences, gender and educational differences have their own advantages and disadvantages. In team-based culture teams are organized motivated and professional but they may lack the experience of working on large scale while on the other hand the government organizations where there is beaurocratic culture, they may have environment of corruption and nepotism but they have capacity and capability to work on large scale. Both teams can perform in their own environment very well. They can learn and share experience with each other. They can learn from each others environment and working relationships. However they'll have to face problems of communication gap and distrust. They may also have to face problem of workflow speed because usually there is culture of redtape in government organizations which slowdown the business process.

OR

As a private sector bank which operated at a limited level in Pakistan, acquired a large local private sector bank, this resulted in extensive organizational growth in terms of number of branches and profitability. Due to trends in globalization and increasing ethnic and gender diversity, it is imperative that employers learn how to manage cultural differences and individual work attitudes. As the labor force becomes more diverse there are both opportunities and challenges to managing employees in this diverse work environment.

Opportunities include gaining a competitive edge by embracing change in the marketplace and the labor force as both banks had different organizational cultures, first one dominated with a team-based culture, and second one having a typical beaurocratic culture of government organizations. This attribute can work as an asset as the newly formed bank after the acquisition can utilize the best features of both the diverse cultured organizations.

Diversity in cultures means diversity in skills and therefore products and service offerings.

Challenges include effectively managing employees with different attitudes, backgrounds, temperaments, values, and beliefs, in addition to avoiding liability when leadership handles various work situations improperly.

Decision Making is also one of the most challenging factors as two different mindsets collide in coming to a mutual decision. This can sometimes delay the decision making process thus affecting the whole work environment and productivity.
